Online/Telehealth Therapy
“When we talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary.” – Fred Rogers
Have you thought you would like to begin therapy but are a bit hesitant to walk into someone’s office? Or maybe you don’t have the ability to get to an office on a regular basis. I can work with you regardless of where you live in Michigan, Ohio, Vermont, & Maine.
Online therapy may be what you are looking for.
Online therapy serves as a more flexible and convenient option for many individuals. And research shows that it can be just as effective as in-person sessions. Using your computer/laptop, tablet or smartphone, you can have access to therapy sessions. All you need is internet access & a confidential location. EMDR can also be done via online therapy.
Pros:
- More flexible. Online therapy can save much travel time to & from office sessions.
- May increase a sense of security & comfort. The comfort of being in your own space while discussing personal & sometimes challenging topics is a significant benefit for some people.
- Convenient for those is remote or rural areas who would need to drive some distance to an office. Clients are able to work with me regardless to where they live in Michigan, Ohio, Vermont, Maine. Without the drive!
Cons:
- Technology isn't always reliable. Internet can be temperamental but we do have backup plans. I use more than one online service just for this reason. And if all else fails, we resort to FaceTime or a phone call.
- Non-verbal cues are limited. This is more often a con for the therapist. I like face-to-face in-person but also realize it's not always the best for the client.
- May not be suitable for severe psychiatric illnesses & crisis. In crisis situations, online therapy might not be as effective as in-person sessions, especially if immediate intervention or physical assistance is required.
How does online therapy work?
Online/Telehealth therapy refers to mental health services & counseling that are provided via the internet rather than in person. We will connect by a HIPAA compliant video-calling app. I will send you a link, you will access that link, sign in and when it’s time, I will start the session. You will be able to see me and I will be able to see you. (You may also be able to see my dogs Spencer & Sebastian as they love walking through my home office to see what's going on!)You should make sure to have a confidential place to participate in sessions. You need a place where you can talk without others hearing or interrupting. I even have some clients who use their smartphone in their car! As long as you are parked.
